What Happened: Uganda's recent Ebola virus outbreak has led the United States to begin screening air passengers traveling from Uganda to the United States, The New York Times reported Oct. 6. According to the U.S. Embassy in Uganda, all passengers will be routed to five U.S. airports for enhanced screening.
Why It Matters: The outbreak is the worst Uganda has faced in two decades and will likely lead to more countries imposing travel restrictions and health screenings. Additionally, the outbreak could lead to greater business and travel disruptions within the country, especially if the virus continues to spread.
Background: As of Oct. 6, The New York Times reported 44 confirmed cases of ebola, 10 confirmed deaths, dozens of possible cases and 20 deaths under investigation — all of which are in Uganda. The outbreak was declared on Sept. 20 and has currently spread across a 75-mile radius.
